When COVID-19 forced the nationwide transition to online learning, schoolchildren found themselves at home trying to transition to the concept along with their parents. Ten-year-old Dakota Adeyemi was in a similar situation, but managed to keep herself busy by searching for Black history on the internet.

College sports programs are looking ahead and starting to plan out how to pick up the pieces COVID-19 will leave behind. Among them is Prairie View A&M University.

For nearly a half-century, Prairie View A&M University students have fought for their right to vote. Today, five alumni and students continue the work of those who came before them.

To know who senior forward Devonte Paterson is and where he's going, first you have to understand what he comes from. On the court, his energy, length and ability makes him one of the most recognizable and talented athletes the Prairie View A&M men's basketball program has ever seen. Every night he plays with passion, integrity and grit … all in hopes of getting a win. Off the court, however, Patterson is a humble, optimistic individual molded by his triumphs over personal adversity.

One of the most important aspects of a point guard's role is to put his teammates in the best position to succeed. After having to sit out the second half of the 2018-19 campaign, senior guard Leon Sneed promised himself he'd do exactly that the next time opportunity presented itself. One year later, he's kept his word thus far. He is currently leading the team in assists (86), all while managing to shoot 50 percent from the field and 65 percent from the free throw line.

A hallmark of a team's collective excellence is the presence of a good sixth man. With senior Darius Williams having assumed this role with the Prairie View A&M men's basketball team, it's no wonder that the Panthers sit atop the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Throughout his two seasons with the Panthers, Williams has proven to himself – as well as his teammates – that he is one of the league's most lethal reserves, exhibiting skills that are more than capable of taking over a game.

While he may not be the loudest player on the court, senior guard Antione Lister has an attention-grabbing game that will be hard to replace as he closes out his final season as a Panther. The 'Mayor', as his teammates call him, transferred to Prairie View in 2018 after a stint at Blinn College. Since joining the program, Lister has been a not-so-secret weapon for the Panthers and is always there when they need a boost on the court.

As proven by the three conference titles under his belt, senior guard Chancellor Ellis knows what it takes to be a champion. Prior to winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship with the Panthers in 2019 and claiming the league's regular season title this season, the sharpshooter affectionately known as the "Elder Statesman" was doing similar things at New Mexico State University, where he was a part of the Aggies' Western Athletic Conference championship season in 2017-18.

When you see No. 15 step onto the court, you see a player that gives the maximum amount of effort on both sides of the floor. You see a player that takes responsibility for his mistakes, and one that is always the first to pick his teammates up when they fall. That player is senior guard Gerard Andrus.

After four years as a Maverick, senior outside hitter Qiana Canete is nearing the end of her final season.

As the women’s basketball season approaches, five of the players are heading into the last push of their basketball careers. This season, the team has five returning seniors whom are entering their last season as Lady Mavericks.

With the Lady Movin’ Mavs season approaching, the team is looking forward to integrating its newcomers and making another national championship run.

New players, new skill sets and new chances. The men’s basketball team has acquired eight newcomers for the 2017-18 season. Four freshmen and four transfer students make up the new faces UTA will see this season.
